Health & Safety Policy & Statement of Intent

If a company employs five or more members of staff, health and safety policies are a legal requirement.

The health and safety policy of a company should consist of three main sections:

  • The statement of general policy on health and safety at work sets out your commitment to managing health and safety effectively, and what you want to achieve. 
  • The responsibility section sets out who is responsible for specific actions. 
  • The arrangements section contains the detail of what you are going to do in practice to achieve the aims set out in your statement of health and safety policy.

But a solid and robust Health & Safety policy can do so much more for a company, it is a demonstration to employees, customers and others of your intentions in managing health and safety and can set out your expectations of staff and contractors.


As stated by The Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), a company’s health and safety policies must be frequently reviewed and assessed, and all employees must be fully informed of any changes that have been made at any time.
